Are you fully prepared for your hike? Have you thought about an insulated cool box to keep your food and water within easy reach during your adventure? Snowleader helps you make the right choice.
The cool bag is an essential accessory for any camper! Choose between hard or soft models depending on your activity and intended use. They can be electric or non-electric, carried over the shoulder or as a backpack. The capacities of cool boxes and cool bags vary greatly. Opt for small or large sizes depending on your needs, and choose from dark or bright colours to suit your taste!
It all depends on your outing and how much weight you're willing to carry. Lightweight, compact and foldable, a soft cool box can be rolled up when empty to fit inside a backpack: perfect for a day hike, a climbing session or a packed lunch, keeping things cool for a few hours with ice packs. Soft models, like those from Hydro Flask, are designed for this kind of versatile, on-the-go use.
A hard cool box serves a different purpose. Its thick walls, insulating foam and watertight lid keep ice for 24 to 72 hours, or even several days with rotomoulded versions like Yeti cool boxes with their 5 cm insulation. Heavier when empty, it's ideal for camping, road trips or bivouacs, where keeping things cold for longer is more important than weight.
Capacity depends on the number of people and the length of your trip, as ice packs also take up space. Allow about 2 to 3 litres of drinks per person, plus food, to avoid a box that's too small or too large. Here are some guidelines:
A well-filled cool box actually keeps things cold better than one that's half empty.
As soon as you're on the move, a cool bag changes everything. Worn on your back or over the shoulder, it frees up your hands and distributes weight, whereas a hard cool box is best for the boot or base camp. Compact, this cool bag fits inside your main pack or can be carried alone, keeping drinks and snacks cool for the stage. A backpack cooler like the Cooler Bag from Petromax is a great example of the balance between lightness and freshness; for everything else, see our trekking and camping equipment.
The way cold is produced divides cool boxes into three types. Without electricity, a passive cool box relies solely on its insulation: simple, portable and maintenance-free, it's suitable for most day trips. A thermoelectric cool box, plugged into a 12V car socket or 230V mains, cools continuously without needing to replace ice, like the affordable models from Mestic. For long journeys and hot climates, a compressor cool box works like a real fridge, such as models from Dometic; for van life, our van life equipment includes cool boxes designed for full autonomy.
The cool bag features one or more compartments, front and side pockets, a quick-access lid, and more. It's easy to clean thanks to its stain-resistant outer fabric... but what really sets it apart is its perfect waterproofing. Dometic, Yeti and Mestic, among others, make it easy to invest in quality gear that's practical and easy to transport. Even the best cool box only performs at its best with a few simple steps to extend the freshness of your food. Before heading to the mountains or hitting the road:
Regular cleaning extends the life of your cool box and keeps the inside fresh. After each outing, empty it, wash with warm soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly before storing: trapped moisture encourages mould and odours. Store it in a dry place, lid slightly open, and avoid sharp objects that could damage the insulation. After a mountain trip or transporting fish, bicarbonate of soda or white vinegar will neutralise odours without harming the materials.
A few accessories help keep things cold longer and make organisation easier:
For individual drinks, our insulated bottles and flasks are the perfect complement to your cool box.
The insulated principle slows temperature changes in both directions: a good cool box will keep a salad fresh or a hot meal warm for your journey. Passive models only keep things warm for a few hours, while some electric cool boxes offer a dedicated warming function, handy for reaching a mountain hut.
For short journeys, an insulated cool box with ice packs can keep medicines or vaccines at 2 to 8°C for a few hours. However, it doesn't regulate temperature like a medical device: for strict needs, use a medical pouch or cool box with a temperature indicator. Avoid direct contact with frozen packs, which can freeze the product (insulin should never be frozen), and always follow the instructions and your pharmacist's advice.
