Two technical ratings help you compare women's ski jackets.

Waterproofing is measured in millimetres (mm). This is the height of a water column the fabric can withstand before letting moisture through. In practice:

• Less than 10,000 mm: occasional use, dry or slightly cloudy weather
• Between 10,000 and 20,000 mm: regular piste use, changeable weather
• 20,000 mm and above: tough conditions, off-piste, heavy snow or rain

Breathability is measured in g/m²/24h. It shows how much water vapour the fabric lets escape in 24 hours. The higher the rating, the better the jacket wicks away sweat. A jacket with 10,000 g/m²/24h is suitable for occasional skiers. Over 20,000 g/m²/24h is considered technical, ideal for intense activity.

Type of insulation

The insulation of your women's ski jacket depends on your activity and how sensitive you are to the cold.

• Softshell jacket: flexible, stretchy, slightly water-repellent. Ideal for active skiers or mild days. Not a substitute for a waterproof jacket in bad weather
