A trail shoe is not just a running shoe adapted for the trail. It's designed from the outset for natural terrain: rocks, mud, roots, elevation. What sets it apart:

• Lugged outsole: deep lugs grip into earth and slippery surfaces. The deeper and more spaced the lugs, the better the grip in mud. On dry, rocky ground, shallower lugs are enough
• Protective plate: some models feature a rigid plate between the sole and upper to shield your foot from impacts on stones and roots
• Lateral support: the upper is often more supportive than a road running shoe, to stabilise the ankle on uneven ground
• Durability: materials are chosen to withstand repeated abrasion on the trail, not just to be lightweight

Running shoes: optimised for the road

Running shoes are designed for hard, even surfaces. Their priorities are different:

• Cushioning: a thick midsole absorbs repeated impact from tarmac over long distances. Essential for protecting joints on high mileage
• Lightweight: on the road, every gram counts. Running models sometimes sacrifice durability for weight

• Smooth outsole: without lugs, it maximises contact with asphalt for a smooth, regular stride

Women's trail shoes are not just smaller men's models. Brands design specific lasts (footbed shapes) tailored to female anatomy:

• Narrower heel: women's feet generally have a slimmer heel. A well-fitted women's last prevents rubbing and blisters at the heel
• Proportioned forefoot: forefoot width is adjusted to avoid compressing toes or creating excess movement
• Overall volume: women's models often feature reduced internal volume and repositioned padding for a better fit
• Unisex models: suitable for both genders but built on a neutral last, without specific anatomical adaptation
