IDT Sport equipment for cross-country skiing
Roller skis: performance and innovation
Roller skiing is the natural extension of cross-country skiing outside the winter season. IDT Sport offers models designed for the two main cross-country techniques:
- Classic roller skis: the Classic RM3 replicates the feel of the diagonal stride on the road. Its front wheel features an anti-reverse system that locks during the push-off, just like fish scales or grip wax in winter
- Skating roller skis: the Skate RM2 and Skate Pro PU RM2 models are designed for the skating technique. Faster wheels and a frame optimised for lateral propulsion: the sensation is similar to skating on groomed snow
- Women's model: the Classic Lady RM2 is sized for female skiers, with a frame and wheels adapted to their needs
Synthetic rubber wheels: comfort and durability
The wheels are the key element of a roller ski. They determine the speed, cushioning and durability of the equipment. At IDT Sport, several types of wheels are available:
- Classic RM3 wheels: designed to replicate the behaviour of cross-country skis on snow, with a good balance between speed and rolling comfort
- Skate RM2 wheels: harder and faster, designed for skating propulsion on dry roads
- Skatewheel Wet Plastic RM2 wheels: a specific version designed for use on wet roads, when conditions are not ideal
Choosing the right equipment for summer training
IDT Skate: for optimal glide
Skating roller skis replicate the skating technique used on groomed snow in winter. The difference compared to classic roller skis:
- Shorter, stiffer frame: it transmits lateral propulsion more efficiently, which is essential for skating
- Faster wheels: designed for speed and endurance, with smooth rolling
- No anti-reverse system: unlike classic, skating is performed with continuous lateral propulsion, not alternating stride
- Two levels in the range: the Skate RM2 for regular use, the Skate Pro PU RM2 for advanced skiers seeking higher performance
Essential accessories for cross-country skiing
A complete roller ski set is not limited to the skis and wheels. Several accessories are essential or highly recommended:
- Rottefella bindings: the Rollerski Classic and Rollerski Skate are compatible with IDT Sport roller skis. They use the same NNN standards as cross-country ski bindings, allowing you to use your cross-country ski boots in both summer and winter
- Helmet: mandatory for safe road use. Watch out for cars and uneven tarmac
- Gloves: they protect your hands in case of a fall and improve comfort on long outings
- Poles: different from cross-country ski poles as they have tungsten carbide tips for grip on tarmac. Winter models are not suitable for regular road use
IDT Sport roller ski sets
To make your equipment easier, Snowleader offers several sets combining roller skis and Rottefella bindings:
- Classic RM3 set: classic roller skis with Rollerski Classic bindings, the reference for diagonal stride
- Skate RM2 set: skating roller skis with Rollerski Skate bindings, for regular skating practice
- Skate Pro PU RM2 set: a higher-end skating set for advanced skiers
- Classic Lady RM2 set: a complete set sized for women in classic technique
Choosing a set avoids compatibility errors between skis and bindings, and often offers a better price than buying separately.
FAQ: Everything you need to know about IDT Sport equipment
How to maintain your roller skis?
A few simple steps will extend the life of your IDT Sport roller skis:
- Clean the wheels after each outing to remove dust, stones and debris that accelerate wear
- Regularly check the tightness of the wheels and bindings. Road vibrations can gradually loosen them
- Check the condition of the bearings. A squeaky or poorly spinning wheel is a sign it needs cleaning or replacing
- Store your roller skis in a dry place at a stable temperature. Avoid leaving them exposed to the sun for long periods, as this can damage the rubber wheels
- Plan for spare wheels when purchasing your skis. They wear out regularly depending on mileage, surface and your weight
Which equipment to choose for starting cross-country roller skiing?
The choice depends on your winter practice and level:
- If you practise diagonal stride (classic cross-country): choose a classic roller ski set like the Classic RM3 set. It replicates the same movement as on snow, with an anti-reverse system to help you progress
- If you practise skating: go for a skating set like the Skate RM2 set. It will help you maintain your technique outside the winter season
- For beginners: opt for a complete set, which includes skis, bindings and sometimes accessories. You'll be fully equipped with no risk of incompatibility
- On safety: even as a beginner, never ski without a helmet. Roller skiing is done on tarmac, with very different fall risks compared to skiing on snow
